Fortune was picked up by a wonderful MCAS animal control officer. FPR was contacted right away and we picked her up late Thanksgiving eve. Fortune was so weak that she was unable to lift her head. We gave her fluids, vitamins and baby food through the night. Much to our surprise, Fortune survived the night and was brought to our wonderful vet, Dr. LeJeune of Barker Cypress Animal Clinic Thanksgiving morning! Fortune was so eaten alive by fleas that she had little blood left. She suffered de-hydration and basically has just been starved. X-rays showed no signs of physical trauma. This is simple case of STARVATION. Fortune continues to fight for her life.

We are seeing an increase number of emaciated animals. Twizzlers and 7Up! (the first two listed below) are still looking for their forever homes. Please donate a bag of dog food for their recovery. We currently purchase a 50 lbs bag of dog food for $24 and we go through approximately 700 lbs of dog food every two weeks!

Kahlua is a 2 year old Toy Chihuahua weighing in at 2.5 pounds. When the call came from the animal shelter that she needed rescue or would be put to sleep, there was no hesitation to get her to safety. She has 2 broken rear legs and will be undergoing the placement of plates in both legs. This will be a difficult surgery due to her legs being so tiny but the vet seems to think it will be a successful one. However, amputation of one of the legs is a possibility, due to the severity of the break.

UPDATE: Kahlua has had her first surgery and is doing well. A pin was drilled through the center of her left femur holding her bones in place. Monday the 19th, Kahlua will undergo her second surgery. Pins will be installed in her right leg in order to hold her bones together in place. She will then be on cage rest for the next several weeks.

UPDATE: Adopted Kahlua finally found her forever home!
